Paddy Power refused planning permission

The installation of new shopfronts and a roller shutter to the front and side of Deptford Arms, 52 Deptford High Street SE8, together with alterations to the elevations and the installation of air conditioning units and satellite dishes to the rear.

"The proposed alterations would adversely affect the appearance and character of this prominent building and would be detrimental to the character and appearance of this part of the Deptford High Street Conservation Area, contrary to Policies URB 8 Shopfronts and URB 16 New Development, Changes of Use and Alterations to Buildings in Conservation Areas in the adopted Unitary Development Plan (July 2004)."

The display of internally illuminated fascia and projecting signs to the front and side elevations of Deptford Arms, 52 Deptford High Street SE8.

"The proposed signage, by reason of its design, materials and means of illumination, would be insensitive to this prominent building and would be harmful to the character and appearance of the Deptford High Street Conservation Area, contrary to Policies URB 8 Shopfronts and URB 16 New Development, Changes of Use and Alterations to Buildings in Conservation Areas in the adopted Unitary Development Plan (July 2004). Big thanks to all 45 neighbours who petitioned against this. See here.

No doubt an appeal will be forthcoming soon...

  1. Good news for now. But which 45 neighbours petitioned against it? According to the website only one objection was received.

  2. There's a list on my link "here"...it's in the Planning notice as 'Neighbours and Representatives' then there's a link 'Click here for a list'. All living in Reginald Road or on the High Street. They must've been treated as "one" in the objections...Consultee One was the Conservation Officer, and Consultee Two was Highways & Transportation, then Neighbours was 3-45. (I'll have to correct my post!)

  3. Oops wrong again...Neighbours is 1-45, but the first two aren't listed. But there were 5 consultees which also included Environmental Health, Deptford Street Traders and Deptford High Street Association...

  4. Good news for now and a big thanks to the Reginald Road and High Street residents who petitioned against it.

(It is a bit confusing that the refusal notice only appears to show one objection when there were 45 signatures - and 43 addresses, presumably because 2 objectors didn't give theirs.)

  5. Oops, sorry Sue, your explanation for the 43/45 discrepancy looks more convincing.

  6. One of the barmaids in the DA (no names,no pack drill) bought me a drink this afternoon for passing on the info about Lewisham Planning. She said that I'd told her more in 3 minutes than Declan had told her in 3 months...

  7. Declan's a tricky customer...err, no he's not a customer, is he? Evidently, he's a tricky landlord.

  8. Similar to another pub owner we know, eh? Trying to get maximum return on minimum outlay...

  9. What pub is that then? Only good pubs in this area are Royal Albert and Dog and Bell, so you must mean...?

  10. So they'll do what they want and Lewisham won't do anything about it...?

  11. sorry i'm abit confused here , so are you saying their going to turn the pub into yet another bookies on deptford high st ? ..

  12. Wilshaw Lass, they have got the gambling license, they just didn't get the permission to put up the green signs and shutters and satellite dishes...so far...so yes, there could be a seventh bookies on the high street.

  13. The story is thus:
Unril recently Sean and Declan own the freehold to the New Cross Inn and the Deptford Arms. The landlord of the New Cross Inn is Simon Nundy who is running for Mayor (he rented off Sean and Declan). Sean and Declan are I understand bankrupt and the Inn is now owned by the bank. I imagine the arms is now owned by Paddy Power if they have applied for planning permission for it unless they would do so before buying, which seems unlikely.
