A little competition for Easter...

So, to test your local knowledge, I've dug this old video up from YouTube. (I remember seeing it once on TV years ago but that was, judging by the date, before I had broadband. Thinking about local appearances on TV jogged my memory) The Streets' video below was filmed entirely (or almost entirely) in Deptford and Greenwich. It might have streets you know, think you know, or know you know but just can't place them.

The aim: let's see how many filmed streets we can name.

How to play: watch the film, and as soon as you see a street that hasn't yet been named, note the time on the recording and post a comment. You can name just one street per post (you can't make consecutive posts – but you can post your second street up as soon as another player has posted up a name).

So, for example, using the image on the clip before you play it, you would post Crane Street SE10, 00:00 and possibly cite the Yacht pub to substantiate your claim.

To stop Anon walking away with the prize* – a right answer to posts with nicknames or google profiles will earn you 10 points. Anon will only get 1 point.

The winner will be the person with the most points at the end of April.

*Prizes will be 100% virtual – the simple glow of satisfaction for being King or Queen of the Streets and knowing that you know the area better than anyone else, should be reward enough...and it might help you get a job as a local minicab driver...

  2. Damn, I've just remembered I can't paste a spreadsheet scoreboard onto the post! I'll have to keep on screengrabbing one...

So while Sue gets 10 points for Deptford Church Street, I claim my 10 points for Deptford High Street, under the railway bridge, travelling north 00:16

  10. This is greedy of me because it's the street that seems to appear the most.

Old Woolwich Road 1:19 and several other appearances after that.

  11. Darryl, I had no idea that that street was called King William Lane. I might know exactly where a street is, yet I've never needed to know what the street is called.

One image that's been bugging me is in a sequence around 00:41. There's park railings on one side and a reasonably wide suburban street. I initially thought it was Canberra Street up on the south side of Charlton Park: I've cycled along that road a few times recently. But looking at Google's Street View, the houses on Canberra Street are as regular as clockwork, the ones on the video are more varied. So I'm still waiting for inspiration. Or someone to give the answer....

  12. Watergate Street 2.46

  13. You're right, you know. I didn't spot that one. If this link works you'll get a similar view, and if you turn it to looking east, you can see the yellow gates.

  14. Oops, forgot to post the link!!!!!

  15. King William Lane actually came up in conversation the other night, otherwise it would have slipped my mind too.

I also thought the park one may have been Canberra Road, Charlton - but the street furniture indicates it's somewhere that may not be in Greenwich or Lewisham boroughs (same with scene featuring a postbox).

This is not as obvious as it may appear...

    Woodland Crescent, Greenwich 00:53
(junction with Maze Hill, before construction of flats - Google StreetView http://bit.ly/bLlmJ8 )

  16. I really can't recall what was there before. Seeing as you have a good street knowledge, we'll take your word as true.

The old fellow with the walking stick at 1:18 is turning into Hoskins Street from the Old Woolwich Road. The green plasterwork on the house on the corner is now white on Google StreetView http://tinyurl.com/yej7cpp

    ReplyDelete
  17. And the person walking in front of some gates with factory buildings behind at 0:58 is also in Hoskins Street, walking south away from the river. http://tinyurl.com/ybw6ht7

  18. The Woodland Crescent site was a school (Maze Hill "special" school) - the flats there now appeared around 2005.

Orlop Street, Greenwich 01:35 (heading east)

    ReplyDelete
  19. And that takes you into the lead, Darryl. I'm not sure what the word is - viewgling or stroogling - but I'm going to have to do do some work to keep up...

  20. The chorus is filmed in Coffey Street (you can see the church spire in the background a couple of times) and the view of the trains right at the beginning (4 seconds) is also Coffey Street.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was holding onto Coffey Street in preparation. But yes, I had to google it to find the name of the street. Right, I'm off to find how far in the cyclist is.

  23. Bikepest, I've deleted your last two comments because you have to wait for someone else to play! (So, you've got 2 bankers - I promise I won't use them - I just hope no one saw them for the minutes they were up....

  24. At 3:25 there's a cyclist wearing a hi-viz cape on Trafalgar Road. (Now you can go :-) )

    ReplyDelete
  25. Trenchard Street at 00.52

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yep, it's the right architecture but I can't find which house it is. So, another 10 points for you.

  27. Riverside Walk, Greenwich - 03:09

Now obliterated - was Lovells Wharf, now covered by about-to-open housing.

(There's another riverside Greenwich bit that's also now gone at 02:38 - Anchor Iron Wharf at the junction of Lassell Street and Ballast Quay; now also housing. The blue hoardings at 02:15 also look like Anchor Iron Wharf. It was a popular location for photoshoots, also features on the inner sleeve of early 90s indie band Airhead's Boing!! ).

  28. I was just looking at an old map trying to figure out the names of the wharves (I don't suppose Google are planning a RiverView)

At 1:05, is that bit of wall the north side of the power station? Just where Hoskins Street ends and the pathway past Trinity Hospital to Crane Street.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Gloucester Circus at 00.26

    ReplyDelete
  30. Damn, that one is obvious when you point it out!

    ReplyDelete
  31. now can I claim Greenwich Foot Tunnel?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I shall make a purely arbitrary decision. In the spirit of local knowledge and participation, go on then!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The alley between Watergate Street and Watergate Stairs, Deptford - 02:52

I think the bit of wall at 01:05 might belong there too, but it could just as easily be the north wall of the power station.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And the council flats forecourt where people like to jump up and down is also adjoining Watergate Street 3:29. Can't remember the house name though.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Deptford Church Street 00.03

I think this wall has gone now, and the green featured here borders Crossfield Street and now opens onto Church Street. You can see Browne House behind the railway...???? or is the wall still there?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, mushroom, we've got that one already. The street is called, I've just discovered, Coffey Street. And yes, the wall is still there. All it does is separate two bits of grass for no apparent reason. In my day, we'd have painted a goalpost on it.
